The relevance of the Gateway of India is incomplete without mentioning the majestic Taj Mahal Hotel. It was built by Jamshedji Tata in 1903. According to popular folklore, this hotel was commissioned by him after he was refused entry into one of the European hotels. It was designed by W. Chambers and offers an excellent view of the Gateway. It has 582 rooms including 51 suites, and is the finest example of luxury living.
